Octopuses are unique in the way they defend themselves. Their body shape and high intelligence level are different from other ocean animals and these differences play a huge role in the way they protect themselves. Octopuses have various skills that help them survive. These include jet propulsion, ink release, intelligence, body structure, and camouflage capabilities.
JET PROPULSION- The first thing most octopuses would do at the sight of danger is use jet propulsion to glide away from danger quickly. Their unique body structure doesn’t include any bones so they are able to squeeze between small surfaces and fit into tiny crevices. The long arms of the octopus allow it to quickly push away water and jet quickly away to safety.
INK RELEASE- One common fact about octopuses is that they are able to release a dark ink from their bodies when they sense they are in danger. This ink will automatically release while the animal is under stress. The dark ink cloud not only inhibits the predator’s vision, but it also affects their sense of smell. Not being about to see and smell anymore confuses the octopuses predator and gives it a chance to get away.
CAMOFLAUGE- Octopuses have the ability to change their pigmentation to a color matching their habitat. Their skin is able to change color very quickly and this helps the octopus even further because it can successfully hide from its prey without having to run away.
INTELLIGENCE- Octopuses are very intelligent animals and can often use their advanced brain to outsmart their predators. After studies, marine biologists have shown that octopuses cannot only remember things short-term, but also have a long term memory. Their ability to react t situations quickly make them able to outsmart and move faster than their enemies.
